Understand the causes of bow legs in babies

Babies who have bowed legs have lower legs that curl outward and keep their knees apart. Although it could seem strange to parents, the condition is common in newborns. Legs straighten and bowlegs resolve as the baby gets older and begins to walk.

But in some kids, the curve either stays the same or gets worse, which is a sign of a health issue. Bowlegs can occur in kids for a variety of reasons, including rickets, fractures, or obesity. Sometimes bone abnormalities or deformities, as well as health issues, can cause bow legs. The following factors can cause a baby’s bowlegs to last past the age of three:

Blount’s disease: The bigger of the two bones in the lower leg, the tibia, develops an anomaly immediately above the growth plate in babies. The inner side of the bone grows slowly while the outside side grows at a healthy rate as a result of this condition. Bowed legs are the result of a developmental defect. Blount’s disease is characterized by precocious walking or learning to walk at a young age, which results in bowlegs.

Rickets: Bowed legs are a common symptom of rickets, a disorder that is brought on by a vitamin D deficiency and is also the cause of the condition.

Dwarfism: If the infant becomes dwarfed, the lower legs may bow. Dwarfism can occur to a variety of hereditary conditions. Due to difficulties turning cartilage into bone, bowlegs and aberrant limb growth are common in infants with dwarfism.

Fractures: A lower leg fracture suffered in a child may lead to incorrect bone repair, which may cause the leg to bow. Tibial pseudoarthrosis is the medical name for the condition.

Lead or fluoride poisoning: Consuming too much lead or fluoride can stunt bone growth and result in deformities like bowlegs. Drinking water is the main source of fluoride and lead.

Obesity: Bowlegs have been associated with obesity. Toddlers who consume junk food or liquids heavy in sugar, like juices and soft drinks, are more likely to gain weight.
